The Cover Story.
A cover story can be used to focus on an important topic and give the particular issue a special 'colour'.
Smoke Signals. "Smoke Signals" is the title of the corporate medium by Reemtsma. The heading on the cover reads "Report on smuggling". " Tracking down the cigarette mafia" and is the headline of the cover story accompanied by a number of different photos. The final part is formed by an infobox and references to the appropriate laws. The choice of colours and typography match with Reemtsma's line of business.
Illustration for a Start. "Nuestro tiempo" uses an illustration for their front page here to visualize the topic of their cover story ''Palliative medicine'.
Long Distance. The cover story dealing with a university department that cares for patients with incurable illnesses comprises ten pages. The story starts with a double-page photograph, inlaid with a headline, subtitle and names of the authors.
Sensitive Photography . Many double pages feature a band of sensitive photos at the top which show the work routine at a palliative ward. The captions are clustered on the left, with the names of the staff and a description of their individual jobs.
Take a Break. Throughout the cover story , the article is divided into two columns per page. On some pages quotes by the staff are placed at the top. The final part consists of service boxes with further details.
A Cool Start. "pwc" is the magazine by PricewaterhouseCoopers. The front page of this issue shows an extreme close-up photo of a blue overseas container referring to the cover story "The world in delivery chains".
A Powerful Combination. This double page is a powerful opening for a series of articles on delivery chains. The infographics at the top of the photo illustrate worldwide streams of delivery. The opening is classical: a spacious photo, a headline and a text on the right. It is essential, though, that such an eye-catching opening is followed by a long story as not to disappoint the readers' expectation.
